Training zones define the intensity bands for an athlete, for example heart-rate, power or pace, so session intensity can be categorised and monitored. Zones are set per athlete, so each athlete carries their own bands.
Where Zones Are Set
Navigate to Athlete Module
Search for athlete
Click on athlete name
Navigate to Training Zones
Zones apply only to the athlete you are viewing. To set zones for another athlete, open that athlete's profile and repeat.
Add a Zone Set
Add a new zone set
Select Activity
Select the metric the zones apply to, for example heart-rate, power or speed, from Zone Type
Select Method that the zone for how the zone is captured
Manual
Step test
Critical Power
Critical Speed
Add Date, aerboic and anerobic thresholds
Enter zone definitions
For each zone, enter a lower and an upper boundary.
Add a zone for every zone the athlete uses.
Enter the zones in order, from lowest intensity to highest.
Validation
The AMS checks the configuration is sensible before a zone set can be saved.
Boundaries must ascend, so each band's upper value sits above its lower value, and each band sits above the one before it.
Bands must not overlap, and must not leave gaps between one band and the next.
Values must sit within the allowed range for the metric.
Note: If an entry breaks any of these rules, the AMS flags it so you can correct it. A flagged set cannot be saved until the values are fixed.
Save
Review the bands and clear any flagged entries.
Click Save Zone Set to store the zone set against the athlete.
The saved zones are then used to categorise the intensity of that athlete's sessions.
Note: Changing an athlete's zones affects how their future sessions are categorised. Review zones when fitness testing indicates an athlete's bands have shifted.
When are different calculation methods used
Manual: User-defined zones based on coach or physiologist recommendations.
Step Test: Zones calculated from aerobic and anaerobic thresholds identified during a step test.
Critical Power: Zones calculated from the athlete's Critical Power for power-based activities.
Critical Speed: Zones calculated from the athlete's Critical Speed for speed-based activities.
This wording should be suitable for both AMS user documentation and the training zone configuration screen.
Method | What it is | How zones are calculated | Best for |
Manual | Coach or physiologist manually enters zone boundaries. | Zones are created using custom values entered by the user (e.g., heart rate, power, or speed limits). | Sports with established zone models or when external testing has already been completed. |
Step Test | Zones are based on the results of a graded exercise test where intensity increases in stages. | Aerobic and anaerobic thresholds identified during the test are used to automatically calculate training zones. Often uses heart rate, lactate, power, or pace data collected during the test. | Athletes who complete regular physiological testing and require evidence-based zones. |
Critical Power | A performance-based method used primarily for cycling. | Training zones are calculated from an athlete's Critical Power (CP), which represents the highest power output that can be sustained for an extended period. CP is typically derived from multiple maximal efforts or testing sessions. | Cycling and other power-based sports. |
Critical Speed | A performance-based method used primarily for running, rowing, swimming, and paddling. | Training zones are calculated from an athlete's Critical Speed (CS), which represents the fastest sustainable pace before fatigue rapidly increases. CS is usually calculated from several maximal efforts over different distances or durations. | Running, rowing, kayaking, swimming, and other pace-based endurance sports. |
