Periodisation Phases Explained:

For coaches: what different phases mean in the Summit Periodisation Planner, how they nest, and how to add a phase to a track.

This article explains the three phase levels in the Summit Periodisation Planner and the terminology used. Use it to structure a plan from the season down to the individual week.

The Three Levels

Macro Plan

Periodised Plan is the Macro Plan is the largest block. It covers a long span such as a full season or an annual cycle and sets the big-picture direction. For example, a rowing squad's Macro might be the whole build toward a national championship.

1. Use it to frame the overall goal and timeframe.

Phase / Meso Plan

Phase is the Meso plan - a medium block that sits inside a Macro. It runs for several weeks and carries a specific focus such as base, build or taper. For example, a four-week build block that raises training load ahead of competition.

2. Use it to group weeks that share one training emphasis.

Sub-Phase / Micro Plan

Sub Phase is the Micro blocks - the smallest block, typically a week or a few days of detailed sessions. For example, a single training week with its day-by-day workload.

3. Use it to plan the detail athletes act on.

How They Fit Together

The levels nest. A Plan contains one or more Phases, and a Phases contains one or more Sub-phases.

Read top down for direction, bottom up for detail. The Macro sets the season goal, each Meso gives a block a focus, and each Micro fills in the day-to-day work.

Note: Three levels is the full depth. Further nesting below Sub-phases is not supported.
